The last car to negotiate the gorge passed through in 1962 when the paved highway along the Fremont River officially opened

and abandoned remnants all along its path

the dam was renamed in honor of president Herbert Hoover in 1947

The rich hues and wild contrasts of these monolithic towers prompted the National Geographic Society to name this region after a popular brand of color film in 1949
