まず１枚目にある車の窓から見たガソリンスタンドを撮り、旅を始めた。1991年7月、ジョージア州アトランタからテネシー州メンフィスまで、ところどころ立ち寄りながら、８日をかけて細い道を運転した。ジャクソンやバーミンガムやモンゴメリーといった大きな街に着くと、パーキングメーターを使って駐車し、何ブロックか歩き回った。本を作ろうという意図はなく、ただ写真を撮ろうと思っていた。
